Steward Duties

As a steward you will wear many hats. As an agent of the union, be clear on what they are as the union can be held legally responsible for your actions or inactions.

GRIEVANCE HANDLER

  1. Enforce the contract
  2. Uphold working conditions
  3. Uphold workers’ rights
  4. Negotiate & settle legitimate problems
  5. Keep records

LEADER

  1. Represent the members
  2. Work for union goals
  3. Establish respect of the member
  4. Inspire the members
  5. Act as a model of fairness
  6. Enforce union work rules
  7. Speak up for the members

ORGANIZER

  1. Organize the unorganized (in some shops)
  2. Unionize the organized (in all shops)
  3. Build solidarity
  4. Welcome new employees
  5. Develop participation

EDUCATOR

  1. Explain union objectives
  2. Spread unionism and union programs

A GOOD LISTENER

  1. Sensing (hearing the message)
  2. Understanding (interpreting the message)
  3. Evaluating (appraising the message)
  4. Responding (doing something about the message)
